surprising things that contain gluten

 Things you probably didn't know contain gluten-

while making the transition to going gluten free, there was a lot of things I thought or would assume were fine to eat, whether it was at the grocery store or out to eat that unforchunetly are not. I've compiled a list of common things you would assume would be safe, but are not.


SPICES/SEASONINGS/SAUCE-
-most soy sauces are actually NOT gluten free, as they contain wheat.
-most Worcester sauces are NOT gluten free, as they contain barley and rye
-sweet chili sauces, or most asian style sauces contain wheat and gluten
-most teriyaki sauces contain wheat and gluten
-some BBQ sauces contain wheat and gluten
-some seasoning mixes, such as asian seasoning, stir fry seasoning, taco seasoning may contain gluten
-gravy mixes
-fish sauce
-some pickle brands actually contain malt which is gluten, due to the distilling process, so just double check. Mt. Olive pickles are usually safe. 

SHELF STABLE ITEMS-
-some soups actually have gluten or wheat, even if it is not a soup containing noodles. flour is commonly used in things such as tomato bisque soup, or chicken and rice soup to make it thick and creamy, so be sure to check
-doritos are not gluten free because of the seasoning, even though they are tortilla chips
-pringles have wheat starch
-some potato chips also have wheat starch, so just check
-rice Krispy treats, rice Krispy cereal contains malt which is gluten... even if its advertised as a "puffed rice cereal"
-canned chili most times contains gluten, so be sure to check
-some ready rice contains gluten baring flavoring, just be sure to check the back. sometimes its Mexican rice, etc that contain barley flavoring.
-rice pilaf
-some puddings flavors contain gluten, be sure to check the ingredients

CANDY-
-twizzlers and licorice most of the time contain gluten
-mounds
-most gummy candy's, such as nerds gummy clusters
-chocolate malt balls
-milky ways
-take 5 bars
-m&m flavors such as cookie, cookies and cream, certain holiday m&m, brownie flavor, etc
-butter fingers
-kitcats
-crunch bars
-nerds
-lindor chocolate truffles contain malt powder so they are not gluten free
-fudge pops, although you would think they would be fine cause its just chocolate ice cream- they common times contain MALT which is gluten. 

MEATS-
-some deli meats actually contain malt or barley flavoring so be sure to check
-most times frozen meatballs contain gluten so be sure to check
-if your eating at an Italian restaurant, most meatballs are made with bread crumbs so they are NOT gluten free!
-some authentic Italian restaurants pasta sauce is made with pasta water to thicken, so that would NOT be gluten free, just check!
-most vegan meat alternatives or specifically most variations of soy sausage, including morning star soy sausages contain gluten
-most veggie burgers, such as morning staveggie burgers
-beef jerkey contains wheat, you'll have to find one advertised as gluten free
-imitation crab
